Transforming forecourts for an electric future

Delivering bp’s first fully electric charging hub

From decommissioning legacy fuel infrastructure to installing ultra-rapid charging and integrated retail, we delivered a fully electric, customer-focused forecourt—setting the blueprint for future EV infrastructure.

Delivering bp’s first fully electric charging and convenience hub

At bp’s Cromwell Road site, the transition to electric mobility moved beyond adaptation to full transformation, creating the company’s first dedicated EV charging and convenience hub in the UK. In a high-demand urban environment, this required more than infrastructure delivery; it called for a coordinated, multi-disciplinary approach that could integrate civil, electrical, structural and retail elements into a single, high-performing solution.

As Principal Contractor and Principal Designer, we worked in close collaboration with bp pulse and Marks & Spencer to deliver the complete redevelopment of the site. Our role extended from the safe removal of legacy fuel infrastructure through to the installation of ultra-rapid charging, new retail environments and a modern canopy, supporting a fully electric, customer-focused experience. This project represents a significant milestone in bp’s EV strategy and established a blueprint for future forecourt development.

From fuel infrastructure to electric performance

Transforming a traditional petrol station into a high-capacity EV hub required careful planning, technical precision and a clear focus on safety and performance. The NG Bailey EV Infrastructure team managed the full decommissioning of the existing fuel system, including the removal of underground tanks, pipework and forecourt infrastructure, working closely with stakeholders to ensure compliance and minimise disruption. This enabled the installation of new electrical infrastructure, including a DNO connection and on-site substation, providing the capacity required to support ultra-rapid charging.

The site is now equipped with high-powered 300kW chargers capable of delivering up to 100 miles of range in approximately 15 minutes, supporting a wide range of EV models and significantly improving accessibility to fast charging in a key London location.

Delivering a fully integrated customer environment

Alongside the charging infrastructure, the project included the development of a modern retail and customer environment, reflecting the shift in how forecourts are used.

A full extension and fit-out of the on-site Marks & Spencer store was commissioned, alongside upgrades to the Wild Bean Café, creating a high-quality convenience offer aligned to dwell time during charging. This was complemented by the construction of a new concept canopy and forecourt layout, designed to enhance usability, accessibility and overall customer experience.

By integrating retail, infrastructure and design into a single delivery model, we created a cohesive environment that supports both operational performance and customer satisfaction.

Managing complexity in a constrained urban environment

Located in a busy area of London, the site presented logistical, environmental and stakeholder challenges that required careful coordination. Working within a constrained footprint, we implemented a structured approach to logistics and stakeholder engagement, liaising closely with local residents and authorities to minimise disruption. Environmental management was a key priority, with continuous monitoring of air quality, noise and vibration, alongside soil sampling to ensure no impact on the surrounding environment, including the nearby River Thames.

During the works, potential ground contamination was identified and safely remediated with no impact to programme, demonstrating a proactive and controlled approach to risk management.

A model for future EV infrastructure

Cromwell Road represents a step-change in how EV infrastructure is delivered. Moving from incremental upgrades to fully electric, integrated environments.

By combining engineering expertise, multi-disciplinary delivery and strong client collaboration, we have created a scalable model for future EV hubs, capable of supporting growing demand while aligning with long-term sustainability goals.

This project not only demonstrates our capability to deliver complex EV infrastructure at pace and scale, but also reinforces our role as a trusted partner in supporting the transition to a low-carbon transport network.
