Building a new partnership with confidence
At the University of Suffolk, delivering effective technical services is about more than maintaining buildings, it’s about creating a reliable, responsive environment that supports learning, research and the wider student experience.
Our partnership began in 2024 following a competitive tender process, marking a new relationship where we had previously delivered limited work. The contract spans a multi-building campus environment, requiring a consistent and adaptable approach to maintaining performance across a diverse estate and from the outset, the transition carried a level of risk. The previous provider had a long-standing relationship with the University, and ensuring continuity of service while building trust was critical. Through a structured and collaborative mobilisation, we established a strong operational foundation, delivering a smooth transition and creating early confidence in our approach.
Delivering a responsive and reliable campus environment
We deliver a full range of mechanical, electrical and specialist services across the campus, including gas, air conditioning, plumbing, fire systems, drainage and lighting protection. Our approach is centred on providing consistent, high-quality maintenance while remaining responsive to the needs of a live academic environment. Through a combination of planned preventative and reactive services, we ensure that critical systems operate effectively, supporting both day-to-day campus activity and key events.
A dedicated on-site technician, supported by our wider account team, provides a visible and responsive presence, ensuring issues are addressed quickly and service quality remains high across all buildings. This is reinforced through structured communication, including regular contract meetings and daily updates, ensuring alignment across all stakeholders and transparency in delivery.
Driving improvement through people, insight and experience
From the outset, we have focused on strengthening service delivery through both people and process. The recruitment of a dedicated on-site technician has significantly enhanced performance, bringing a high level of attention to detail, professionalism and ownership. This has been recognised through internal awards and strong client feedback, with additional responsibilities entrusted to the role, including the maintenance and upkeep of plant areas.
Alongside this, we have implemented practical improvements to optimise asset performance, including reviewing air handling unit maintenance regimes and introducing more efficient, sustainable solutions. Our in-house energy specialists have also engaged with the University to identify future opportunities for energy optimisation, ensuring the estate can continue to improve over time.
Early operational challenges have also been used to strengthen resilience. A significant water leak incident highlighted limitations in the existing emergency response approach. Working collaboratively with the University, we implemented immediate mitigation measures and carried out detailed reviews, resulting in improved planning and greater preparedness across the estate.
Supporting the wider university community
Our role extends beyond maintaining physical assets, contributing to the wider university environment and its social value ambitions. We have supported community initiatives including the University’s Christmas charity campaign and contributed to sustainability-focused events such as Earth Day, where we shared insight on apprenticeships, social value and the role of engineering in supporting long-term sustainability.
Looking ahead, discussions are underway to introduce apprenticeship opportunities within the contract, supporting skills development and creating pathways into the industry for future talent.
