As part of our remit at Sizewell C, we have an ever-expanding role in managing the various land holdings, including areas specifically required by development consent order (DCO) conditions to maintain a Marsh Harrier lake, surrounding scrub, grasslands and hibernacula.
The aim was to create Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG), and an optimum habitat for Marsh Harrier and other species displaced by the construction of the Sizewell C Nuclear Power Plant.
Site work and habitat creation
Clearance of invasive vegetation, poor-quality soils and historic spoil from Marsh Harrier lakes
Water management works including gullies and reservoir screening
Removal of redundant concrete and arable tracks, conditioned for future use
Tree trimming and selective de‑vegetation to improve access and growing conditions
Creation of new habitats through redistribution of hibernacula and excavated materials
Grassland creation, shrub planting, dead hedging and extensive tree planting to support BNG recommendations.
Protection enhancement outcomes
Perimeter bunds planted with wildflowers to meet BNG requirements.
Installation of reptile, rabbit and deer fencing to protect wildlife and seasonal migration
Introduction and translocation of aquatic plants and reeds, with fascines to reduce erosion
Seasonal working to safeguard water voles,otters and breeding waders
Ongoing monitoring and surveying to measure habitat success and DCO compliance
Transformation of farmland into thriving habitats supporting species such as the Marsh Harrier.
